Flow: Our Journey to $10K MRR (May-Aug‘24)

I'm Martyn, founder of Flow, and alongside my co-founder Tom, we're on a mission to make content creation easier for the average business owner. $10K MRR is often seen as a major milestone in bootstrapping a SaaS Company, so I thought I'd share how we're getting there. This isn't a blueprint for success. It's simply our story of building a SaaS startup from the ground up. If you're on a similar path, I hope our experiences offer some valuable insights.

The Birth of Flow

After a decade of helping businesses navigate digital content creation, I saw a recurring problem.
My clients were constantly struggling to balance running their business with maintaining their content creation for social media.
My concept was straightforward: simplify content creation the way meal kit services like Hello Fresh and blue Apron simplified cooking.
Deliver ready-to-publish content with minimal effort.
But the real challenge wasn't just generating content.
It was ensuring consistent quality.

Experimenting with AI: The Early Days

In early 2023, after much reflection, I hacked together the first version using Google Sheets and the ChatGTP API.
I proved it could generate quality content with minimal input.
This lean, experimental approach was crucial.
It allowed for rapid testing and validation without significant upfront investment.
This laid the foundation for Flow's future development.

Overcoming Challenges: Refining the Vision

Recognizing the need for additional expertise (and motivation), I shared the early version with a good friend Tom and we co-founded Flow.
Together, we transitioned Flow from a basic spreadsheet tool to a more reliable no-code platform.
This allows us to invite some very early users who’s feedback became instrumental to building out the product we have today.
Mainly, it highlighted the need for simpler, more intuitive editing tools.

Launching Flow: A New Beginning

July 2024 marked a significant milestone – Flow's official launch.
Our early users, primarily existing clients, quickly embraced the product.
This gave us the confidence to scale.
We emphasized user feedback and implemented a referral-based model.

Iterating Based on Feedback: Enhancing User Experience

As users engaged with Flow, we identified areas for improvement.
Content refinement and formatting emerged as key pain points.
In response, we developed new features.
These allowed users to provide feedback and make edits more easily.
Throughout this process, we adhered to the principle of "don't make me think."
We ensured the user experience remained intuitive.
This was crucial even as we added more sophisticated features.

Setting Goals: The Path to $10K MRR

Our current goal is to reach $10,000 in monthly recurring revenue (MRR) by early 2025.
This milestone will allow us to dedicate ourselves full-time to Flow.
We've mapped out our journey from 10 to 100 users, and eventually to thousands.
This growth requires building robust support systems.
We must maintain a high standard of user experience.
